What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are the most basic essential oils. Natural, aromatic hydrocarbons made of isoprene (5 carbon molecule), produced by living organisms such as plants, mammals & other animals, fungi, insects, reptiles, algae and bacteria. Known as the most widely spoken language; terpenes, like pheromones and hormones, are produced for communication.
Naturally enhancing your everyday life without you even realizing or thinking twice about their role. Terpenes are the largest and most diverse class of chemicals and are the building blocks of many familiar scents, such as, lavender, pine and citrus. Plants use terpenes to communicate, some deterring pests, while others will attract certain insects to accompany pest control.
Aside from natural pest control in plants, terpenes can produce physiological responses in humans just like your favorite aromatherapy essential oils. Calming, relaxing, uplifting- just a few of the different associated effects; although, not everyone will experience these the same. We are all different and producing our own unique terpenes (pheromones and hormones) to influence how we experience and interact with the world around us (and within us) and the thousands of terpenes we experience day to day. Just like many of your favorite essential oils, most terpenes also have anti bacterial and anti fungal properties aside from their aromas and effects.
What is the 11 Hydroxy Experience?
When you orally consume cannabinoids, your body processes them through your digestive tract and metabolizes them through your liver. During this process a conversion is taking place and the former, Delta 9 THC is being metabolized into 11 Hydroxy THC, before entering your bloodstream and reaching your Endocannabinoid System (ECS).
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in cannabis flower that work with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) by imitating the natural endocannabinoids our bodies produce. When activated, endocannabinoids maintain our internal stability and health or homeostasis; mediating the communication between cells. Homeostasis is our bodies’ ability to maintain a balance even when conditions change; we need that “perfect” balance for our cell’s optimal performance.
Under the 'Terpenes and Cannabinoid Recipes' menu, aside from terpene enhanced and cannabis infused recipes, you will find information about oral consumption and cooking with cannabis, along with some information about terpenes.
